What is the Child's Play Donation Widget?

The Child's Play Donation Widget is a tool created to make fundraising for Child's Play Charity easy! If you're just popping a donation link on an existing game stream, running a week-long marathon, or donating in honor of someone, the donation widget is what we created to make it simple and secure.

What personal information does the Child's Play Donation Widget collect?

If you wish to sign up for a free Donor account, we require only an e-mail address in case we need to reach you regarding your account. Any other personal information is optional, and not stored unless you explicitly enter it.

Why do you need access to my Twitter, Facebook, etc. to create a Child's Play account?

These services are only used to authenticate you on the Child's Play site. In every case, we request access to the minimum amount of personal information allowed by the service provider, and we don't use any of it.

How does the Child's Play Donation Widget secure my personal information?

The small amount of personal information that we have is encrypted with AES 256-bit encryption before being stored in our databases. In addition, all connections made to our system are through encrypted SSL connections.

What are the browser requirements for the widget?

Internet Explorer v8+, Chrome v3+, Firefox v3.5+, Opera 12+, Safari 4+ and other modern browsers should all support the widget.

How do I report errors?

Please send any errors that you may find to Widget Support. The more information you include about the error, the more likely it is that we will be able to find a solution.

Contributor Questions

What is a "Donor account"?

A Donor Account is an optional account that you can create on our system to keep track of the donations you have made, and to retrieve tax receipts. More Donor features are planned for the future. Click the "Donor" and "Organizer" menu links to switch between the two accounts.

How do I create a Donor account?

Head over to the Donor Login Page and follow the instructions. Once created, your account can function as a Donor account and an Organizer account.

Do I have to make an account to contribute?

You do not - however, you do need an account if you wish to log and view your donation history, print your tax receipts, or have access to other planned features in the future. Donations made while not logged in, or prior to the creation of an account, will not be available in your donation history and you will not be able to print a receipt for them.

If I make a contribution, when will my money be withdrawn?

This depends on where you tell PayPal to retrieve your funds. Payments from your credit card or your PayPal balance should take place immediately, while eCheck payments can take up to 7 days to process. If you require more specific timing, please contact PayPal.

Am I eligible for a tax receipt?

Yes, Child's Play is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, so you are able to deduct your donations. You can find your tax receipts on your Donor Profile Page.

My tax receipt lists my name as "[Anonymous]". How do I change that?

You need to change the "Private Name" value on your Donor Profile Page.

Can Organizers see my personal information?

Yes, but only if you let them. You can choose to remain completely anonymous, or to allow Organizers to access the following information: Your unique Child's Play ID number, your "Public Name" (optional), and your e-mail address. You can set this privacy option on your Donor Profile Page.

Organizer Questions

What is an "Organizer account"?

Organizers are able to create fundraising "Events" on our donation system, and keep track of all of the donations that they bring in to Child's Play. Once an Organizer has created an Event and it has been approved by our staff, they will be able to add our donation widget to their website, blog or video stream page. More Organizer features are planned for the future.

How do I create an Organizer account?

Head over to the Organizer Login Page and follow the instructions. Once created, your account can function as a Organizer account and an Donor account. Click the "Donor" and "Organizer" menu links to switch between the two accounts.

How do I create a new Event?

After creating an Organizer account, head over to your Events List and follow the instructions to create your first Event.

Why can't I delete Events?

We require that all Events remain on our system for internal accounting purposes, and matching donations to their Events.

How do I add the widget to my website?

Once you have created an Event, you are ready to add the widget to your site. Head over to your Organizer Event List and click on the Edit link for your Event. At the bottom of the page will be a text box labelled "Widget Code" that contains the single line of code for the widget. Copy and paste that code into your website. That's it! Keep in mind that your widget will state that it is "Not Approved" until our staff has reviewed and approved your Event.

I can't paste the widget code into my page. What do I do?

For security reasons, does not allow you to include any external scripting on their site. This makes it impossible to include a widget on their site without their intervention. We have been working directly with to get a version of the Child's Play widget set up as a "Panel" on their new interface, and are currently waiting for implementation of this feature. We currently do not have an estimated timeline as they are entirely volunteering their time and resources to make our system functional on their site. In the meantime, we suggest that you add the Child's Play logo to your page, with a link back to your Event's donation page.

What happens if I don't reach my goal? What happens if I exceed it?

Not meeting or exceeding your goal won't influence the widget. Goals are just there to be real-life achievements that we can work towards and celebrate!

Help! My donation total on the widget went DOWN instead of up!

This will happen if one or more of your donations is contested, for example, if the transaction was reversed by PayPal or there was a chargeback on the credit card.

My widget isn't updating after a donation is made. What do I do?

The widget will automatically update every 60 seconds. If it is not updating, try and refresh the page to reload the widget. If a page refresh does not help, the donation transaction might not be complete. For example, eChecks can take up to 7 days to clear. Check the transaction in your PayPal account and make sure it says that the transaction is complete. If you are sure that the payment should be appearing on the widget, you can contact Widget Support.
